James Townsend - Politician
James Townsend was born in 1737 into a wealthy London family. His mother Bridget Phipps was of African and European heritage - her grandmother was a former slave. Townsend's father, Chauncy Townsend was English. Townsend had a privileged upbringing, he had the best start in life. His father was a politician so he was exposed to an upper class lifestyle.
In 1772 Townsend was elected Alderman for Bishopsgate ward, London (an Alderman works closely with the mayor). Eight years later in 1780 Townsend made history by becoming Lord Mayor of London, he was the first known person of African descent to do so. Townsend was known for his liberal
views. He spoke out against slavery and aligned himself with radical reformers such as John Wilkes who was critical of government corruption.
In 1782 Townsend was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Calne a borough in Wiltshire. He championed parliamentary reform, criticised corruption and championed democratic accountability.
James Townsend passed away in 1787.
