Sake Dean Mahomed  -  serial Entrepreneur 

Sake Dean Mahomed was born in Patna, India in 1759. He served as a trainee surgeon in the British East India Company’s army before leaving India in the 1780s for Britain with his mentor Captain Godfrey Evan Baker.

In 1794 Mahomed published The Travels of Dean Mahomed - the first known book in English written by an Indian.

In 1810 Mahomed and his Irish wife Jane opened the Hindoostane Coffee House in London’s Portman Square - which was the first ever Indian

restaurant in Britain. Although the venture closed after two years it left its mark.

After moving to Brighton Mahomed launched his next venture, therapeutic Indian head massage combined with steam baths, known as ‘Shampooing’ treatment. He opened Mahomed’s Baths on the Brighton seafront. The treatment on offer were marketed as being beneficial for general health and vitality.

The baths were popular, so much so that Mahomed became the ‘Shampooing Surgeon’ to Kings George IV and William IV.

Sake Dean Mahomed died February 1851.
