Sir Macherjee Bhownaggree - Politician

Macherjee Bhownaggree was born 1851 in India, he travelled to England in 1882. In 1895 Bhownaggree was elected as a Conservative member of parliament (MP) representing North East Bethnal Green. He became the second MP of Indian heritage elected to the Houses of Parliament (the first was Dadabhai Naoroji). Bhownaggree was an MP for eleven years. During his time in politics he supported British rule in India.

Outside of politics Bhownaggree was a successful lawyer. He trained at Lincoln’s Inn in London and

was called to the bar in 1885. He also wroteBhownaggree translated Queen Victoria’s journal Life in the Highlands and The history of the East India Company constitution. He was also a philanthropist. Bhownaggree donated to libraries and education initiatives in the UK and India.

He was knighted in 1897 by Queen Victoria, for services to the British Empire and for advocating for British rule in India.

Bhownaggree passed away in 1933.
