Ulric Cross - Barrister, Judge and Ambassador

George Ulric Monsegue Cross was born on the 1st May 1917, he grew up in Port of Spain, Trinidad. When he was eleven years old Cross won a scholarship and received free secondary education, however when he was thirteen years of age his mother died. Cross was devastated – the death of his mother affected him greatly.

During the Second World War Cross was a navigator with the Royal Air Force – he navigated eighty missions, was highly praised and remarkable in the role. Read more about Ulric Cross the war hero here. Once the war ended,

Cross trained as a barrister and in 1949, he was called to the Bar of one of Britain’s most prestigious Inns of Court, the Middle Temple. He went on to work in the Caribbean and then Africa, helping shape newly independent nations. Cross served as Crown Counsel and Attorney General in Cameroon where he helped draft foundational legal frameworks. In Ghana he worked with President Kwame Nkrumah as a senior legal advisor and in Tanzania he worked with Julius Nyerere.

Cross went on to serve as a High Court Judge and High Commissioner to the UK. He was also an Ambassador to Germany and France for Trinidad and Tobago. He also mentored Caribbean and African lawyers.

Ulric Cross died in Trinidad aged 96.
