

Ulric Cross the RAF Pilot
George Ulric Monsegue Cross was born on the 1st May 1917, he grew up in Port of Spain, Trinidad. When he was eleven years old Cross won a scholarship and received free secondary education, however when he was just thirteen years of age his mother die. Cross was devastated. The death of his mother affected him greatly.
At the outbreak of the Second World War Cross decided to sign up and support the war effort. In 1941 he boarded a ship to Britain to enlist in the Royal Air Force. Cross trained as a navigator in England and Canada. When qualified he went on to join the RAF’s Pathfinder Force, a specialist unit within Bomber Command tasked with identifying and marking enemy targets for bombing missions
Cross’ bravery earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1944 and the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1945. He was the most decorated West Indian military personnel of World War Two. A hero.
After the Second World War Cross became a barrister, High Court Judge and Ambassador.
Ulric Cross died on the 4th October 2013 in Trinidad.
which meant flying into enemy territory, in darkness in order to evade detection. Cross became Squadron Leader and completed more than eighty missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. The recommended maximum number of missions was fifty.
